Welland Safe Communities Partnership:

WELLAND
SAFE COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP (WSCP)

Dedicated to working together to make Welland
the safest place…because we live, learn, work and play here.

Welland is designated a SAFE COMMUNITY in
February 2005!

The purpose of the Welland Safe Community Partnership (WSCP) is to “work together to make Welland the safest place…because we live, learn, work and play here”. Community volunteers from a variety of employment, education, government, and social agencies have come together in support of the partnership. In addition, a number of residents are working with us.
The Welland Safe Community Partnership got its start in December 2003. A meeting of more than 30 community stakeholders took place to share the value of becoming a Safe Community.

The response was very enthusiastic and meetings began taking place once a month to develop the partnership and each of the sub-committees.

The WSCP developed a Business Plan and submitted that plan to the Safe Communities Foundation of Canada in January 2005. We are very proud and excited to advise the residents and businesses of Welland that the City of Welland has been designated a Safe Community!  Our Sub-committees have been formed and are working hard to develop and implement programs that support the overall objectives of the partnership.

The WSCP will review current injury data and programs from our local employers and other sources, ensuring the delivery of innovative prevention programs that meet the ongoing needs of Welland.

The Welland Safe Community Partnership is working for Welland. Won’t you come out and join us?

What is a SAFE COMMUNITY?

The Safe Communities Foundation (SCF) is a national, not-for-profit charitable organization dedicated to making Canada the safest country in the world to live, learn, work and play. The SCF along with safety experts across Canada believes that all injuries are predictable and preventable.

The SCF works in partnership with the private and public sectors to improve the health and safety of workers and people throughout our community. The goal of the Foundation and all 47 participating Safe Communities in Canada is to eliminate injuries  while promoting a culture of safety through the implementation of  programs and education.

Welland is the first Safe Community to be designated in the Niagara region. The Welland Safe Community Partnership is working with the SCF to establish Welland as a contributing member bringing innovative programs and services to our own Safe Community initiative.

WHY become a SAFE COMMUNITY?

What benefit to you can be realized as a resident or business owner in Welland?

The WSCP’s mission is to save lives, prevent injuries and reduce the cost of preventable injury in our community. We want to work with Welland businesses to improve the economic viability of Welland. Promotion of safety as an attitude, not an action will get Welland working together for a better tomorrow to create a better life for our children who are 20% of our population, but 100% of our future.

You have already seen the WSCP in action in your city! Recent programs have included the placement of traffic radar boards in school zones in an effort to educate drivers of their speed and children’s safety along our roadways. The WSCP also placed a wrecked automobile at the corner of Woodlawn Road and First Avenue at the beginning of the school year to remind students to take care while driving on our city streets.

Welland is the first city in the Niagara Region to be designated a safe community under the umbrella of the national Safe Communities Foundation.

The Welland Safe Community Partnership is a volunteer-based, community-wide initiative which operates for the purpose of improving safety throughout the community – whether that’s in our schools, our workplaces, our homes or on our streets.

This partnership will be able to provide health and safety-related programs that are of interest to the citizens of Welland. This initiative is beneficial to all of our residents – young and old – as well as to our many small and large businesses. We will bring together programs that already exist and create new ones to ensure that everyone in Welland is aware and has access to resources.

The Welland Safe Community Partnership is a non-profit organization that will be able to operate based on the generosity of volunteers throughout the community and partnerships with individuals and small and large businesses.
